15 Months

Dear Larkin,

This past week you became 15 months old!  Fifteen doesn't sound like that big of a number, it's just a few after 10 and not even far away from single digits... Fifteen months isn't that long in the scheme of our lives, BUT it seems like you've been here with daddy and I forever and it's hard to remember what it was like before you were born!

Your 15th month has been a fun one to watch in your development.  Somethings are now much easier and then again some things are becoming much more difficult.  You are crawling everywhere, starting to take little steps everywhere AND getting into everything.  It's been so fun watching you learn to balance and walk.  You are very proud of yourself and mommy and daddy are too.

My favorite times of day are evenings.  You've just had dinner and mommy has usually gotten you ready for bath time.  Daddy is hopefully home by now and while the tub is filling up you are naked, happy, crawling everywhere and I feel blessed.  I treasure these moments in my heart and think to myself how in just a few short years I will be wishing this season back... when a cute little naked bottom could be seen darting this way and that through the halls of our house.

Still, these past weeks have been more challenging too.  I have asked myself where is my sweet baby and who is this angry toddler and what do I do with him?!  Of course I expected this to come, but was just surprised it's already here.  You are growing more independent which mommy is so happy for, but the past two weeks we have had more tantrums and melt downs than ever.  Screaming, shaking your head "no" and pushing things (or people) away has become the new normal that we are trying to address.  The suddenness with which this phase came on and the constancy of the fussiness even had me thinking it could be an ear infection and so I took you to the doctor who told me your ears were just fine but that some toddlers go through this season around 15 months.

WHATEVER it is, I'm doing my best to love you through it.  Which at times might look like mommy singing to you as you scream back at me or a time out in the crib so mommy doesn't go insane or even little slaps on the hand or bottom.  Hopefully soon we can figure out what works best with you and become consistent but you are definitely embodying the "fierce warrior" meaning of your name when you are frustrated!

When I take a step back, I'm learning there is reason to be thankful even in the times of tantrums and fussiness... it's keeping me hourly even minute by minute going to the Lord to ask for wisdom and patience and creatively trying to understand what you are frustrated about and offer alternatives, or at times to offer you stability by setting the boundaries and letting you just be frustrated.

...As far as eating, your favorite food is peanut butter and honey and you LOVE bananas!  You've become pretty picky when you eat so I've started just letting you eat what I put out and not offering you anything else and cutting back on snacking.  It was hard at first (it elicited a few tantrums) but I think it's starting to help as you've gotten a bit better about eating whats on your plate and mommy has stopped offering multiple choices :).

About 2 weeks ago you started waking up very early in the mornings anywhere from 6-6:20.  This is something that has not.been.fun. but we let you cry until getting you at seven... and just recently you've gotten the point that you realize we're not coming in there so a few times you've gone back to sleep....still, this is the first time I won't be looking forward to daylight savings!

You love spending time with your friends from playgroup, with Miss "Morgan" (you say MMMM MMMM when I tell you we're going to see Morgan) your grandparents and especially your daddy.  Lately you only want daddy when he gets home.  No one else (ie mommy) will do!

You are a sweet, curious, active little guy and the biggest blessing in daddy's and my life! I've noticed you are comprehending so much of what we say but you haven't quite started talking.  You say "ba" for bath "maa" for mama, "da" for dada and squeal with delight when you see Piper.

Those are the big milestones we are at, little one... Happy 15 months to my sweet little Lark!

XO,
Mommy
